Short Term Ophthalmologists Needed!

Dr. Wendy Hofman and Dr. Elisee Baruwa are general ophthalmologists who teach in the ophthalmology residency program long term.  However, subspecialists in every field of ophthalmology are highly encouraged to come and teach for as long as they are available, and we have a number of short term visitors every year that add a tremendous amount to the teaching program.  Dr. Richard Johnston, retina specialist, is pictured here with his daughter Annie.

If interested in serving as a short term visiting ophthalmologist at Bongolo Hospital, please contact Dr. Wendy Hofman at

Pediatric Eye Surgery

Pediatric surgery is also performed at the ophthalmology clinic, often for pediatric cataracts.

“The Waiting Porch”!

The ophthalmology clinic is a busy place, and generally is programmed out for 6-9 months for surgeries.

Dr. Elisee Baruwa

Dr. Elisee Baruwa, from the Democratic Republic of Congo, was the first resident to graduate from the Ophthalmology Residency in July 2013.  He performed over 800 cataract surgeries during his training, along with many other procedures.  Dr. Wendy Hofman is pictured at his side.
