Expanding on a twenty-year-old nursing dispensary, Bongolo Hospital was established in 1977, when a surgeon and two nurses arrived. A nursing school was started shortly thereafter and is still running strong.

Today, the 158-bed hospital in the rural town of Lebamba includes busy Surgery, Adult Medicine, Maternity, Pediatrics and Emergency departments, as well as one of the busiest eye-clinics in Gabon. Full- service HIV, TB, and Dental clinics round out the services.

The full-time medical team now includes four surgeons, two ophthalmologists, one pediatrician, one family practitioner/obstetrician, two internists, an anesthesiologist and many other ancillary personnel.

The operative case-mix includes all types of general surgery as well as urologic, gynecologic, thoracic, orthopedic (mainly repair of fractures), plastics/ burns, endoscopic, ophthalmologic, and ENT procedures.
