The vendors at “the blind store” at Bongolo Hospital may not be able to see, but they somehow keep track of bills and coins well enough to give correct change to hospital-goers in need of essentials like hygiene products, basic food items, and even fans that can be rented by the night. According to one of today’s vendors, this little shop was originally funded by a donation from an American short-term medical missionary. “Without him, it would not have been possible for us to have this blessing; [before] we were always working under the hot sun.” In the true spirit of “teaching a man to fish,” the simple gift of funds to build the small covered stand has now allowed the blind of Bongolo to support themselves for over a decade.

LE STAND DES AVEUGLES
Les vendeurs du « stand aveugle” de l’hôpital de Bongolo ne peuvent peut-être pas voir, mais ils ont une maitrise par le touché des billets et des pièces assez bien pour rendre la monnaie de manière correcte aux personnes hospitalisées ou en visites qui ont besoin de produits essentiels comme des produits d’hygiène, des produits alimentaires de base, et même des ventilateurs qui peuvent être loués la nuitée. Selon l’un des aveugles vendeurs d’aujourd’hui, ce stand de vente a été financée à l’origine par un don d’un missionnaire médecin américain à visiteur. « Sans lui, il ne nous aurait pas été possible d’avoir cette bénédiction; [avant] nous travaillions toujours sous le soleil brûlant. Dans le véritable esprit «d’apprendre à un homme à pêcher», le simple don de fonds pour construire le petit stand couvert de vente a maintenant permis aux aveugles de l’hôpital de Bongolo de subvenir à leurs besoins pendant plus d’une décennie.
